Mercedes, Texas | Harlingen, TX
Located just north of the border to Mexico lies Mercedes, Texas. This town is known as “The Queen City of the Valley” or “La Reina del Valle,” and it’s easy to see why. From its unique natural beauty to its welcoming environment, Mercedes is a wonderful community for Bert Ogden Harlingen Kia to serve. Here’s a look at the area’s rich history and fun activities you can do while visiting.
Mercedes was first settled in the late 1700s by ranchers. It wasn’t officially made a town until the American Rio Grande Land & Irrigation Company founded it on September 15, 1907, calling it “Diaz.” The town was incorporated on March 8, 1909, making it one of the oldest towns in the Rio Grande Valley. Over the years, the town was renamed three times until the name “Mercedes” was finally settled upon.
Oil was discovered in a Mercedes field in 1935. After this discover, the population doubled from 3,414 to 7,621 residents by 1940. Since then, the town continued to flourish, establishing itself as a lovely location to raise a family in Hildago County.
